| November 29, 2005 | | CHaINA Summit Summary of 1st Day | I attended the first day of the CHaINA Summit today. Issues discussed included:
- A shift to China of added value R&D. China may become a global R&D center where products are made and designed in China. According to one speaker China currently has 3 million engineers in the job market.
- China's low labor rates will continue to remain relatively low and this combined with more R&D and design performed in China will help companies contininue to generate revenues and profits from new products which have short product life cycles.
- Companies are refocusing on quality and not just low cost.
- Demand driven manufacturing will become more important. The supply chain must have the volatility to respond to changes in demand and new product introductions.
There was not any discussion regarding how demand chain management pertains to China in particular. I suggest this is an important area for further research.
