| April 19, 2006 | | Key Drivers: Legislation, Consumer Demand, and Public Opinion | New global supply chain trends are emerging as more companies pay attention to the substances and materials in their products. Stakeholders have a heightened interest in corporate social and environmental responsibility. Trends are reflected in the fact that companies are starting to publish sustainability reports, which are similar to environmental reports, yet with a particular emphasis on social considerations. Additional supply chain challenges are presented as these companies probe more deeply into the substances and materials used to manufacture their products.
“Green Supply Chain” trends are global, as can been seen below:
- China: Legislation imposes “substance restrictions along with labeling, marking, and testing requirements for electronics products
- Japan and Korea expanding chemical substance laws
- USA
CA SB50 WEEE and RoHS type regulations
Numerous proposed State legislative initiatives to require end-of-life take-back and/or restrict substances from use
- Mexico and Canada updating hazardous waste laws to include WEEE
Canada loosening import/export laws on viable WEEE recyclables
- MERCOSUR (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay) proposed “Policy on Environmental Management of Wastes and Post-Consumer responsibility” for electronics waste management
Key Points:
- Not just legislative
- Lead by public opinion
- Your competition is seeking advantage
- A global phenomenon
- Watch for future developments
