Warehousing in China

Challenges of warehousing in China
Dr. Charles Guowen Chang, director of the China Development Institute in Beijing, made a presentation on warehousing at this year’s Warehousing Education and Research Council (WERC) annual meeting in Orlando. Below are a few of the key points discussed, as cited from the MHM staff writers:

  • Nearly 40% of warehousing in China is done manually.
  • 43.8%  of warehousing activities consist of a mix of mechanical and manual operations.
  • 16% of warehousing has some automation and IT infrastructure.
  • About 5% of warehouses have good IT systems (according to Dr. Chang)
  • Existing warehouses are in heavily populated areas, making truck traffic difficult.
  • Lift truck usage is up 70%
  • RFID and wireless infstracture usage at ports
