China promised safe food and toys for overseas customers

China’s government is currently in a 4-month nationwide product recall campaign.

After a series of high profile recalls, the Chinese government established a 4-month nationwide product quality campaign in August. The campaign set up a new recall system and offered training courses to toy manufacturers. Additionally, the customs offices have implemented a tracking system, enforced 100% checks on the production of raw materials for food export and ensured all packages are printed with the proper labels.

Early December, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi stated that “the campaign has been very successful so far.” The State Council revealed that 626 criminal cases were filed, involving the production or sale of substandard food, drugs, and farm produce.

The result of the 4-month campaign will be reviewed in late December or early January. Based on the results, the Chinese government will set up a long term strategy to further improve product safety.
