| December 11, 2007 | | The effects on global supply chains grow each day as the truck drivers in Italy continue to strike. Italy is not exporting their products to other countries and fuel and fresh foods are not being delivered within Italy. | Truck drivers in Italy are currently on strike with a planned end date of Friday. Drivers are striking over shorter work hours and rising fuel prices. Trucks are blocking traffic on major highways, which is causing chaos on the roads. Most products are delivered by truck in Italy; therefore, there have been few fresh food and gas deliveries since the strike began early Monday morning. Not only are the store owners being affected but the farmers, whose products will go bad if not delivered, will be affected by the strike. According to gas station associations 60 percent of the pumps have no fuel and if the strike is not resolved by the end of Tuesday most of the other pumps will be out of gas. Truck drivers are congregating with their vehicles near toll booths near large cities and the borders to prevent other trucks from performing deliveries. This will not only affect Italy but also the global economy with products from Italy not being exported. | | |
