New York City yellow taxi cabs will be green with new carbon emission standards

New York City’s taxi fleet will be environmentally friendly with Bloomberg’s plan to reduce carbon emissions.

New York City yellow cab is becoming more environmentally friendly. Currently there are 400 hybrid taxi cabs. The hybrids used in New York are the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander hybrid, Lexus 400h, and the Ford escape hybrid.

With Bloomberg’s plan there will be 1,000 hybrids by October 2008 and will increase by 20 percent each year. The plan is for all 13,000 cabs to be hybrid. In addition to having the entire fleet be hybrids in five years there will be rules on the miles per gallon for each vehicle. In October 2008 a new taxi will be required to achieve 25 miles per gallon and by October 2009 each taxi will be required to achieve 30 miles per gallon.

The current Ford Crown Victoria gets 14 miles per gallon compared to some hybrids which get 36 miles per gallon.
