| January 09, 2008 | | Retailers are banned from giving free plastic shopping bags to consumers and manufacturers producing ultra-thin plastic bags starting this June | There are 1.3 billion people living in China today. Can you imagine how many plastics bags are used everyday? Enormous. The State Council posted a notice on the central government website stated that “China uses too many bags and fail to dispose of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country.” These lead to serious environment issues: pollution and waste of energy and resources. Starting June 1, 2008, supermarkets and shops are prohibited from giving away free plastic bags to consumers. The government encourages consumers to use reusable cloth bags and baskets. However, shopkeepers expressed concern that the inconvenience will turn consumers away. In addition, plastic bag manufactures are prohibited from producing bags under 0.025mm thick. New tax is being considered by the finance authorities to discourage production of plastic bags and encourage more recycling. | | |
