Shanghai port moved up in global ranking with the most throughput

Shanghai port surpassed Hong Kong to rank second globally with the most container throughput and first for the third straight year with the most cargo throughput

The Shanghai Port and Shipping Bureau official announced that the throughput of Shanghai port grew by more than 20 percent and exceeded 20 million twenty-foot container equivalent units (TEUs) in 2007. The success of the port is contributed from “the port’s expansion in recent years and the prosperous export-oriented business in the Yangtze River Delta, a major powerhouse of the country’s economy.” The port has 42 TEU piers with routes to more than 20 global ports.

The cargo throughput continues to rank first globally with throughput reaching 560 million tons in 2007.
