| February 06, 2008 | | 200 Danish chief stewards and Danish ratings on its Danish-flagged container and tanker vessels will be laid off due to the high cost of not using international employees. | Maersk has announced that it will lay off 200 Danish chief stewards and Danish ratings on its Danish-flagged container and tanker vessels. The crew will be replaced with a lower cost international crew. According to the company, “in order to return to profitability, AP Moller-Maersk is focusing on being competitive and cost effective. Today we have to hire seafarers based on cost competitiveness.” Most of the lay-offs will be effective in the next 6 months; however, the chief stewards will go through 2009. The company stated “the layoffs are a result of the internationalization of the seafarers which has been going on for some years, and reflect the fact that international crew have proven their capabilities and abilities to offer a qualified alternative to the Danish chief stewards and ratings." | | |
