Maersk to lay off 200 employees

200 Danish chief stewards and Danish ratings on its Danish-flagged container and tanker vessels will be laid off due to the high cost of not using international employees.

Maersk has announced that it will lay off 200 Danish chief stewards and Danish ratings on its Danish-flagged container and tanker vessels.  The crew will be replaced with a lower cost international crew.  According to the company, “in order to return to profitability, AP Moller-Maersk is focusing on being competitive and cost effective. Today we have to hire seafarers based on cost competitiveness.”

Most of the lay-offs will be effective in the next 6 months; however, the chief stewards will go through 2009.  The company stated “the layoffs are a result of the internationalization of the seafarers which has been going on for some years, and reflect the fact that international crew have proven their capabilities and abilities to offer a qualified alternative to the Danish chief stewards and ratings."
