| March 03, 2008 | | With the increasing costs of labor and transportation and the new container fees, cargo owners are moving to different ports. California’s green initiative is also not allowing the ports to expand to better accommodate the Ocean vessels. | There is currently a fear that the traffic at the port may decrease due to new container fees, and high labor and transportation costs. The ports have also not been updated in over 5 years, even though throughput continues to increase. Michele Grubbs of the Pacific Maritime Shipping Association stated, “Cargo owners are diversifying their port gateways for a number of reasons, one of which is the inability of Southern California ports to develop new projects to meet capacity demands. The simple fact is that these terminal projects are essential if there is to be green growth in California.” Part of the concern of expanding the ports, is the environmental impact of the increasing shipments. Green is a hot topic today, and California wants to keep their air pollution to a minimum, while still keeping jobs and port traffic. | | |
