| March 12, 2008 | | Shanghai expects to grow by 15 percent this year and surpassed Singapore as the world’s largest container port | After surpassing Hong Kong with container volume of 26.15 million TEUs last year, China expects to reach over 30 million TEUs this year and will surpass Singapore which reported container volume of 27.9 million TEUs last year. The rapid growth is contributed by the Yangshan port’s third-phase expansion. Shanghai International Port Group Co. will invest additional 4.5 billion yuan to add berths. The President of Shanghai International Port Group Co Chen Shuyuan commented “It’s not surprising we overtook Hong Kong, given the size of the mainland. The ports in Hong Kong and Singapore have advantages in natural resources and better policies, and we still need to learn better technology and expertise on management and servies from Hong Kong and Singapore.” | | |
