| March 14, 2008 | | Nike reported problems with its manufacturers in China with underage workers, unpaid wages and falsified documents. Nike continues to try to improve the conditions in their China facilities. | Nike, an Oregon based sneaker company, reported problems with their suppliers in China. Problems included falsified documents, underage workers and unpaid wages. These are problems which not only Nike is facing but many companies that manufacture/source in China. Nike has 180 manufacturers in China with 210,000 employees. Last year Nike put in place a monitoring system to check the identity of their workers in China and they found “67 cases of people who were below minimum age standards when they were hired but were now 18 or older,” and two people who were underage. A report on Nike’s website stated “As China continues to develop we see progress and best practices emerging. But like our partners in any other country, the factories we contract with in China continue to face challenges as well.” | | |
