Guangdong provinces will discontinue issuing license to vehicle that cannot meet stage III emission standard starting July 1

After increasing the nation’s emission standard in Beijing and Shanghai, Guangdong province will being transitioning to the new standards starting July 1. The government website has announced that Guangdong will discontinue issuing licenses to vehicles that cannot meet the stage III emission standard, which is equivalent to the EU III standards. A 30 percent reduction of pollutants is expected as the result.

To date, there are more than 13 million vehicles in Guangdong, and the number is growing rapidly. The deputy director of Guangdong environmental protection bureau Chen Guangron commented “If nothing were done, vehicle emission would threaten the province, especially the Pearl River Delta region, which has a dense population, more vehicles, faster industrial development and poorer air quality.”  The government has encouraged the public transportation segment to begin transitioning.
