| November 13, 2007 | | The FedEx transit center now being built in the airport will bring an additional 1 million tons of cargo volume per year | FedEx and the Guandong Airport Management Corporation signed the agreement this July to build a new transit center in the new Baiyun international airport. The investment is worth approximately 150 million US dollars. The expected completion date is set for December 2008; 600,000-800,000 tons of cargo volume is expected within the first year of operation and 1 million tons afterwards. With the new volume and capacity, the new transit center will become the largest transit center outside of the United States. The new Baiyun International Airport was ranked number 25 with an annual throughput of 650,000 tons in 2006. With the new volume added by the FedEx transit center, the goal for 2010 is to move up to top 15 with an annual throughput of 2 million tons. The new Baiyun international airport is the main airport in Guanzhou, the capital of Guandong Province in southern China. Guanzhou is part of the Pearl River Delta, and it is one of the leading economic regions as well as a major manufacturing center in China. | | |
