| December 21, 2007 | | The 35,000 kilometer truck road network will connect 78 urban cities and over 39 million people. | The “five north-south and seven east-west main roads” is a 35,000 kilometer truck road network which covers from “the Russian and Mongolian border sin the north down to the skirts of southeast Asia and links China’s western hinterland to its eastern coast.” The construction of the network started in 1990, and is set to be completed by the end of 2007. The current phase is in the mountainous southwestern Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. The network will cover more than 39 million people connecting all cities with a population of more than 500,000. Weng Mengyong, Vice Minister of Communications, stated that “the roads will contribute to promoting local economic development, raising people’s life quality, enhancing local governments’ ability to deal with emergencies and improve public services.” An extended national truck road system, the “7918 Network”, is also under construction and is set to be completed by 2020. The network will cover 85,000 kilometers with 7 capital radials, 9 north-south major highways and 18 east-west corridors. | | |
