Severe cold weather in Canada slows down CN Railway

The cold weather has reduced the amount of trains running for at least 36 hour. Customers are warned about their shipments being delayed.

Canada National (CN) Railway has reduced the freight shipments in Western Canada due to the severe cold temperatures.  The reduction in service may last as long as 36 hours, and customers have been warned that their shipments may be delayed.  The low temperatures cause problems with the brakes which use air pressure, and cause the steel rails and wheels to be brittle.

Hunter Harrison, president and CEO stated “After carefully evaluating the situation in Western Canada, we have determined that modifying our freight operations is the most prudent course of action for all our stakeholders.”

Canadian Oil Sands Trust, who is the largest partner in the Syncrude oilsands development, has also stopped operations.  They usually produce 350,000 barrels of oil daily.

The Temperatures in Edmonton were forecasted to be a high of -24C (-11.2F), and in Fort McMurray -30C (-22F) on Wednesday.
