| February 05, 2008 | | The Clean Sky project has been started to reduce carbon emissions and noise emission from planes manufactured in the EU. Sixteen EU countries are participating through different industries, research centers and universities. | According to the European Commission, “aviation accounts for 4 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions, blamed for global warming.” A research project, Clean Sky project, has begun with the goal of making planes quieter and less polluting. Aerospace firms will pool knowledge to create engines which can run on alternative fuels, use less energy, and be quieter. According to Marc Vantre, CEO of French conglomerate Safran's aerospace propulsion division, “There are three main objectives: the reduction by 50 percent of carbon dioxide, halving the level of noise and reducing by 80 percent the level of nitrogen oxide emissions.” Currently 86 organizations from 16 EU countries have joined the program. These organizations include 54 industries, 15 research centers and 17 universities. Vantre believes that the funding for this project would come from the aerospace firms. The end goal of this project is that planes manufactured in the EU from 2015 will emit less carbon emissions and will be quieter. | | |
