Shipping Options from Yangtze River to Yangshan Deepwater Port

According to the September issue of Lloyd’s Freight Transport Buyer, Shanghai’s new deepwater port is scheduled to be operating at 70% capacity by the end of this year, with approximately 3m boxes being diverted from Waigaoqiao to Yangshan. What will become of Waigaoqiao as the Yangshan deepwater port takes the center stage in Shanghai’s international shipping center developments? Which port near the mouth of the Yangtze will be used as a transfer hub for Yangtze river cargo destined for the Yangshan deepwater port? Will there be options for shipping direct from the mouth without the need to use a transfer port?

What Are the Options?

Use a Transfer Hub Near Mouth of Yangtze River

Waigaoqiao might fulfill a new role as a transfer hub for Yangtze river cargo originating from inland cities such as Wuhan, Nanjing, and Chongqing.

Put Freight on Direct Ocean Ship

Companies using ocean ships will have no problem shipping direct from the Yangtze river to the Yangshan deepwater port.

Go by Land

Companies choosing this method must bring the cargo to the dock and unload. The associated costs for this are relatively high.

Use a Pusher Barge Which Can Handle Ocean Voyage

In April of this year the Shanghai city’s Port Authority Group revealed that they have taken responsibility for a series of problems associated with Shanghai’s “River to Ocean Transport Model”, including the selection of a location for a transfer hub, determining barge ship type, as well as coming up with viable solutions.

Part of their work entailed collecting the information on ATB ship types (these ships are able to sail inland rivers as well as the ocean) and a comparison their advantages and disadvantages.

Not all vessels can sail direct from the Yangtze river to the ocean since they must be able to adapt to both the inland river transport and the strong ocean waves. Thus, the Shanghai Yangtze River Shipping Company created a new type of ship which is a hybrid form of barge and tug boat which can reduce the operating time on the Yangtze and realize the government’s goal of “one ship to the end”, allowing Yangshan and Waigaoqiao’s container shipping to establish a “high speed channel”, solving the Yangshan and the mid and lower Yangtze river “direct transport” problem.

Conclusion

Tracing cargo flows becomes increasingly important to effective supply chain management. China supply chain managers should be aware of their shipping options from the Yangtze River Delta to Yangshan. It is still unclear as to whether Waigaoqiao will serve as a major transfer hub for Yangtze river cargo and how much cargo will be shipped direct by ocean vessels or by custom made pusher barges. Those with an understanding of the cost and service levels available at this important link in the supply chain may be able to better leverage their relationships with the shipping companies, 3pls, freight forwarders, and customers.
