Nanjing Port Handles Much of Yangtze River Water and Land Transhipments

The port City of <st1:city w:st="on">Nanjing</st1:city> is situated on the lower reaches of the <st1:place w:st="on">Yangtze River</st1:place> and is accessible to vessels up to 35,000 dwt all year round. It is the largest inland port on the Yangtze with nine port facilities handling all types of cargo including; containers, petrochemical, coal, automobiles, break bulk and dry bulk materials. <o:p /> As a multifunctional port it handles much of the Yangtze’s sea/river and water/land transhipments and comprises three 25,000 dwt berths (Longtan), approximately twenty 10,000 dwt berths, over fifty 1,000 dwt berths, and a number of single point or multi point moorings. The port boasts 59,338 sq metres of warehousing, 477,878 sq metres of storage yards and an 18km port railway.<o:p /> <o:p> </o:p> Throughput for 2004 exceeded 100 Million tons broken down as follows : <o:p /> <o:p> </o:p> <ul><li>55% oil<o:p /></li><li>10% coal<o:p /></li><li>10% ore<o:p /></li><li>2% grain<o:p /></li><li>5% containers<o:p /></li><li>5% petrochemical<o:p /></li><li>3/4% steel<o:p /></li><li>9/10% breakbulk/general<o:p /> (including 860,000 TEUs) <o:p /></li></ul> <st1:city w:st="on"> Nanjing</st1:city> is the furthest point up the Yangtze that can accommodate vessels over 10,000 dwt, due to the air draft limitations imposed by the 1st <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Nanjing</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Bridge</st1:placetype></st1:place>. Presently the maximum draft of vessels traveling to <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Nanjing</st1:place></st1:city> is 10 metres. With this limitation, vessels over 40,000 dwt must be lighter before calling. The Ministry of Communications is looking into dredging to 15 meters, which will allow Panamax size vessels to reach the port. Containers are handled at the Xinshengwei and Longtan ports.<o:p />   The container terminal at Xinshengwei achieved a throughput of 360,000 TEUs in 2004, exceeding the design capacity of 250,000 TEUs. It is expected that traffic will be diverted to the new terminal at Longtan. The new container terminal at Longtan has a design capacity of 520,000 TEUs and achieved a throughout of 500,000 TEUs in 2004. Longtan expects to see a throughput of 660,000 TEUs in 2005.
