Dole recently started its mission to become carbon neutral in its supply chain of bananas and pineapple originating in Costa Rica. What steps will the world’s largest fruit and vegetable producer take to achieve this goal?

<a href="http://www.dole.com/">Dole</a> exported from <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Costa Rica</place></country-region> more than 540,000 tons of bananas and 160,000 tons of pineapples last year. In the process of exporting these fruits, carbon emissions come from the entire process such as; growing, packing, transporting, and distributing the fruit. Now, Dole’s environmental policy will be trying to neutralize these emissions. A partnership with the Costa Rican Government, who wants to be carbon neutral by 2021, will have both sides working together towards their goals. With a very extensive supply chain, Dole will have to perform a high-level life cycle analysis to understand its emissions both internally and externally. With the analysis, Dole can find out where they have to focus their attention. For example, railroad transportation is more efficient than road transportation for an emission position. With 20% of the transportation of bananas in <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Costa Rica</place></country-region> being rail, they are looking for new ways to enlarge that percentage. They will also be working with suppliers and customers to include every part of the life cycle.
